One of the biggest hurdles that Poornitha faced when she got into films was that the audience still remembered her as Radhika's little daughter in the popular TV series 'Chitti'. Her name was Kalyani then.

Even before she completed her class X, she made her debut as heroine in a controversial film. Her powerful image as a child artiste continued to haunt this film too.

So she decided to change her name from a very traditional Kalyani to a modern-sounding Poornitha and try acting again.

She claims that she now has a film each in all three languages-Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. But the films have run into delays and she is awaiting their release. "I also have to make time for my studies. That's why even though I continue to get offers, I have decided to take a break from films to complete my school exams. After that, I'll return to concentrate exclusively on films again!" she says.

'SMS' is the name of the Malayalam film starring Poornitha in the lead role.
