Acclaimed actor Bharat Gopi passed away due to cardiac arrest in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 71.
He was working in director Balachander Menon's 'Dhey, Ingottu Nokiyae' when he had the cardiac arrest. He was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital at Kayankulam. This happened last week. In order to give a better treatment, he was shifted to a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.
The actor was cremated with state honors yesterday, the 30th of January.
Bharat Gopi was easily one of the very best actors that Malayalam film industry had ever seen. He was known for the way he could blend in with his characters. At the age of 35, he made his debut in director Adoor Gopalakrishnan's 'Swayamvaram'. The film was released in 1972. It was in his film 'Yavanika' that Mammooty made his debut. In the film, Bharat Gopi played the role of a womanizing tabla-player with a drama troupe. Mammooty was the cop who steps in to investigate his disappearance.
Just when Bharat Gopi's career began to peak, he came down with a debilitating paralysis attack. Slowly, he began to regain his health and made a comeback.
The actor had won countless awards for his performances and also for a book that he wrote about films.
He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
