For about 25 years, everybody kept talking about Mammooty and Mohanlal. For a change, the past year belonged to a number of young heroes.
Dileep had a bad year. There was only one big hit- 'Vinodayatra' with director Sathyan Andhikaat. Everything else turned out to be very average, much to his annoyance. The one film that he expected a lot from, 'Kolkotta News', didn't make it to the theatres at all.
Suresh Gopi's never-say-die attitude and a series of average grosser kept him alive in the memories of the audience. Still, 'Nadia Kollapatta Rathri' was a wow film.
Jayaram continues another bad year. The man is in such a predicament that he seems to be unable to do anything right. If all these weren't bad enough, someone sparked off a rumor that he was planning to sell his bungalow in Chennai. This led to a spate of calls to his residence enquiring about the price. He wasn't happy about it at all.
The superstars Mammooty and Mohanlal continued to have a new release each alternative month. Both also have equally good record at the box office. Mammooty had a good year on an average. 'Mayavi' and critically acclaimed 'Orey Kadal' did very well. Mohanlal started the year with a fabulous note, but ended it badly. Still, on an average, it was a wow year for him. His two films 'Hallo' and 'Chota Mumbai' were two of the best performers at the box office this year.
Shrinivasan had a surprise big hit with 'Arabikatha', the heartwarming story of a man who comes to terms with his ideologies...
There were quite a few newcomer, but the year belongs again to Prithviraj. Last year, when he won the state award for best actor, there were many who wondered if he deserved it. But Prithviraj is now in a position where he can sit back and let his work do the talking.
'Chocolate' was the biggest blockbuster in the history of Malayalam cinema. He now has the distinction of having starred in 'Chocolate', the highest-grosser of the year.
Wow!
