Mammooty can do no wrong when it comes to films. There were some delays in the release of ‘Balram vs Taradas’ which had resulted in rumors that the actor and director were nervous about the film’s box office appeal.
But, the superstar and IV Sashi proved everybody wrong. According to initial reports, the film is all set to become one of the best ever box-office hits of Mammooty.
After a gap of more than fifteen years, Mammooty and IV Sashi unite to come up with this big-budget extravaganza. The two had worked in 34 films together. ‘Balram Vs Taradas’ is special because probably for the first time in the history of Indian cinema, characters from two films were going to feature together. Inspector Balram made his first onscreen appearance in ‘Avanazhi’ and then in ‘Inspector Balram’. Taradas the smuggler made his appearance in ‘Athirathram’.
The battle between the cynical but honest cop and the suave smuggler is the core of the new film.
The story begins when construction workers dig up Hussain Sahib’s land to construct a college and end up finding a huge collection of arms and ammunitions buried in the grounds. Inspector Balram, who has now become the DySP is brought in by the Chief Minister to investigate the case. Varma (played by Mukesh) is his assistant in the case. Balram unearths lot of leads and soon Taradas becomes his prime suspect. Bu now, Taradas has become an international smuggler who specializes in drugs and arms supply.
He operates from Dubai and has a huge clout in the state politics. His associates include a minister named Mustafa, a local woman MLA (played by Vani Vishwanath) and some well-known figures in the state political circle.
Taradas is smart and ruthless and is very well aware of the fact that the DySP is after him. Unfortunately, he is madly in love with the beautiful actress Supriya and she too loves him. To make matters worse, Balram comes to know of it too.
Balram arrests her on false charges and imprisons her. This forces Taradas to step out of his hiding and confront the police officer directly. Just when you thought that the film is heading for a nail-biting climax, you are in for a disappointment. Taradas decides to mend his ways and reform himself!!!
But, that doesn’t diminish the film’s effect in any way. Jassie Gift has scored good songs in the film. His re-recording suits the tone and pace of the film. It sure is a nice way to make a comeback after disappearing for a while.
