Everybody loves Dileep for his sheer versatility. But, it looked as if he had pushed his luck a bit too far with his previous film 'Pacha Kudhira'. Though it had completed 50 days, not many are convinced that it really was a hit film. Dileep, however, doesn't have to worry because his new film 'Chess' sure knows how to entertain without resorting to buffoonery.
This time around, he plays the role of a young man who pretends to be blind and takes revenge on the baddies.
Here's the story-
Former DGP Krishnadas, played by Sai Kumar, has an illegitimate son Vijaykrishnan , played by Dileep, who lives with his mother in a village. Finally the ex cop decides to acknowledge Vijaykrishnan as his son. He invites the mother and son to the city. But, Krishnadas' cousin, the present City Police Commissioner, Deva, has other plans.
Deva, played by Vijayaraghavan, is after Krishnadas' properties. Just when Vijayakrishnan and his mother come to the city, he murders Krishnadas. Between Deva and the property, there now stands a will that was written by Krishnadas. Deva and his associates, Circle Inspector Sharatchandran and Dysp Koshi, go after the mother and son.
In a violent confrontation, they set Vijayakrishnan's mother ablaze. The son gets arrested on trumped up charges. He is brutally beaten up in the police custody. The police throw him out, believing that he had lost his eyesight during the beating.
Vijayakrishnan recovers, continues to pretend to be blind and goes after the villains. Soon the mind-game begins.
This time, Dileep doesn't meddle with comedy. That department is taken care of by Salim Kumar and Harishri Ashokan. Salim Kumar is the caretaker of the house in which Dileep lives during his revenge spree. Harishri Ashokan is a small-time thief who ends up with the blame of all the high-profile murders that start to occur in the city.
The film might probably not impress you much when it comes to logic, but it entertains. Heroine Bhavana has nothing at all to do. She is a doctor in the film. For a while, this is going to be her last film in Malayalam. She appears in a scene or two and surprisingly, doesn't even get to sing a song with the hero.
This is the debut film for the director, Raj Babu. He hasn't wasted much time with unnecessary song sequences. In fact, the film has just one song and it isn't much to write home about.
Still, the film works beautifully.
'Chess'- Very interesting!

• Story
• The fact that there aren't many hindrances in the story's flow
The Bad
• Heroine has nothing to do
• Sometimes, the director loses touch with logic
The Ugly-
Nothing at all.
