So many films were made with the ocean as the backdrop. ‘Chemmeen’ is one such example. Mohanlal was very excited about acting in his first film around the ocean. S Janaardhanan makes his directorial debut with this film. Laila makes her debut in Malayalam with this one.
And, there was nothing special about this one other than Mohanlal.
Mohanlal is Isahak, a fisherman who lives in Puthenkara, a tiny hamlet. His father, Innocent, is a mentally imbalanced person who lives as an inmate of an old age home run by the local Christian priest played by Jagady Shreekumar. Isahak also is one of the main donors of the home.
Isahak has a noble soul. And he is a genius football player. He falls in love with Devi, who lives in the neighboring hamlet, Mattukara. The feelings are mutual. Since the sea is everything for Isahak, he decides to marry her and have his first night in the sea too! Her family members and hamlet people aren’t happy about this relationship and decide to kill Isahak on the day of his marriage.
In the chaos that follows, Devi ends up killing her brother and goes to prison. A crestfallen Isahak lives a life of solitude. Then comes the football match between his team, ‘Beach Eleven’ and the rival team ‘Seven Stars’ from Mattukara. Now, Isahak is an asset to his team. In order to stop him from playing, they kidnap his father and as ransom, demand that he doesn’t play the game.
If this was not bad enough, his wife manages to get a parole and arrives at the village to meet him on exactly that day…
The story sounds good but when you watch the film, you realize that almost all the scenes were lifted from one film or the other. There is absolutely zero chemistry between Mohanlal and the heroine.
If the film is doing well, credit simply belongs to Mohanlal.
The Good- • Mohanlal • The football match with IM Vijayan
The Bad- • No chemistry between Mohanlal and Laila
The Ugly- • Nothing new in the film at all. Even the climax was lifted from a Telugu film!!!
