Horror always has a market in the Indian film industry. If they aren’t outright shoddy, they almost always recover their costs and make profits too. ‘Moonamthoraal’ is one such film.
This one is a landmark film for many technical reasons- this is the first full-length digital film to be shot in India. This one is also the first film to be broadcasted from a satellite link up to all the theatres. Digital format and satellite broadcast had drastically reduced both time and cost that went into films. Now that the film is doing reasonably good business too, don’t be surprised if the trend catches on.
Here’s the story-
Two young nurses, Annie and Anupama, played by Shereen and Samvritha, decide to stay in a secluded palatial house and prepare for their exams. The only other resident is the house’s caretaker. Soon, the two young nurses realize that they aren’t the only occupants of the house.
They see ghostly figures of a woman in white and a young boy. Terrified, they speak to the chief doctor, Dr Arun, who also happens to be a psychiatrist. Anupama has a crush on him. Just before the end of the first half, a startling truth is revealed.
In the second half, a writer-cop couple move into the house. Jyothirmayi was the writer and Jayaram was her cop-husband. The wife notices something unnatural about the house and soon ends up getting possessed. And then it heads for a thrilling climax…
The problem with the film is- it reminds you of lot of other films like ‘The Others’, ‘Bhoot’ and ‘Vaastushastra’.
But the good things about the film are- excellent cinematography, great lighting, good music, performances that are not exaggerated…
