“I act only in front of the camera”- Prithviraj
|
Prithviraj is a much-misunderstood actor. The media said that he was headstrong. They called him an egomaniac. They called him an arrogant womanizer. Some even went to the extent of asking if he even knew how to act.
“I act only in front of the camera. I have no reason to act when I’m not in front of the camera. I’m not like those others who might hate you in their hearts but grin at you and hug you when they see you. I’m like my father in these things. He wasn’t all that good at creating a very friendly impression when he met strangers. It took a lot of time for him to get comfortable with people whom he didn’t know. But my dad never minced his words when it came to speaking the truth. My brother is a lot like my mother in that department,” the actor began.
Staying abroad all by himself and getting a good education sure has had a positive effect on young Prithviraj. Even if his film career never took off, he had alternative career options thanks to his education. The confidence reflects in his personality. Veterans like Tilagan, Lalu Alex and director Vinayan call him “Sukumaran’s son who has a spine”.
Prithviraj’s “spine” had earned him lot of enemies in AMMA. When the enmity was at its peak, Prithviraj had to suffer a lot. His career in Malayalam came to a grinding halt. But he nurtures no grudge against them now.
Is it true that you had once exchanged rings with Meera Jasmine?
Initially when I read those stories, I felt angry and very bad. But then I realized that there are many who earn their wages by writing such stuff. It wouldn’t be right on my part to snatch their source of livelihood away by denying those stories, would it?
Okay, then what exactly are your marriage plans?
Have you ever heard me talk about marriage before?
No. Just curious, but what exactly are your dreams when it comes to life-partner?
Frankly, I never created such a list. But if you ask me, I could come up with a thousand conditions. I want a girl with beautiful eyes and long hair. I want her to walk very beautifully. I believe in no secrets. I believe in speaking my mind. I also believe that it is more interesting if you don’t have to go in search of your life-partner. What is yours will come to you.
Do you identify with the role that you play in ‘Classmates’?
The film happens in flashback. I play the role of someone who was actively involved in student politics in college. In real life I was in college at a time when protests had slowed down. And, well, I did most of my college studies abroad.
So, do you know how to act?
This is a very subjective question. I’m one of those lucky few who are making a career in something that they really love doing. I love the film industry. I was initially interested in making a career behind the camera. I wanted to join as an assistant director. But when I came back to Kerala for my vacations, I ended up playing the lead role in ‘Nandanam’. Frankly, I never thought that I could become an actor. But fate had a different plan. Director Ranjit approached me.
I watched some of my favorite films crash at the box office. Some of my films that became box office hits are the ones that I least expected to succeed. When someone approaches me with a new offer, I listen to the story not from an actor’s point of view. I try to see the story from the audience’s perspective. I give a serious thought about the film’s potential to bring the audience from their homes to the theatres. My judgment has gone wrong many times before.
I never felt that a role wouldn’t suit me. I’m not going to say that I have mastered the art of acting. I will have to act in atleast a hundred films before I could properly evaluate myself as an actor. Right now I believe that I’m capable enough to do all sorts of roles.
Why shift to Tamil then?
Language has nothing to do with acting. I never planned to act in Malayalam first and then switch to Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. I’m just an actor. My aim is to act in good roles. Language doesn’t matter to me.
Who loves you more- Malayalis or Tamilians?
I don’t think people in Kerala make such a huge fuss when they run into an actor in person. The off-screen distance between an actor and his audience is very small here. Once upon a time, the audience would be thrilled to run into Prem Nasir. But these days, its no big deal to meet Mohanlal or Mammooty in the flesh. That’s how the Malayalam audience treats its film stars. But things are very different in Tamil.
You have to pose for pictures with your fans, sign their autograph books, interact with them...
What are your future projects?
Prakashraj’s ‘Mozhi’, director Vasanth’s film and in Malayalam, I’m going to work with M Padhmakumar in ‘Vaastavam’.
